What to watch for
Where each job type fails
Kitchens
The layout, the cabinets and the counters set most of the price. Settle them on paper before anything is ordered, and the build runs to plan.
Bathrooms
Water does the damage you can't see. Soft floors and loose tile mean the walls get opened and checked before the new finish goes in.
Basements
Moisture and ceiling height decide what a basement can become. A dry, well-lit basement is often the least costly new room in the house.
Additions
An addition has to look as if it was always there. The foundation, the framing and the siding all tie into the house you have.
